Water sago bushes sparingly to keep the soil from becoming waterlogged. Water to a depth of 4 inches every 14 to 21 days. Allow the soil to drain in the top 3 inches before watering again. Cease all supplemental water during rainy weather.
Spread a 3-inch-thick layer of organic, wood-based mulch in a 4-foot radius around the base of the sago bush. Leave a gap of 3 to 4 inches between the bush and the layer of mulch to facilitate moisture evaporation from the soil.
Feed young sago bushes once a year in early spring using 18-6-8 ratio slow-release fertilizer. Switch to 12-4-12 ratio fertilizer after two years. Apply the fertilizer according to the manufacturer's recommended dosage. Water the bush thoroughly after feeding it.
Prune sago bushes only when the fronds become damaged or unattractive looking. Remove the affected fronds by severing them at the base using anvil shears or a pruning saw. Make the cut flush with the trunk.
Watch for signs of overwatering or poor drainage such as yellowed fronds, uneven growth and an overall wilted appearance. Cease watering immediately if the sago bush shows signs of water damage. Transplant the bush to an area with better drainage, if possible. Resume light watering only after the bush perks up and appears healthy.
