How to Prune a Jasmine Grand Duke

"Grand Duke of Tuscany" is a cultivar of Jasminum sambac also commonly known as Arabian jasmine. It is famous for its double set of petals that gives the jasmine flowers the appearance of a lush white camellia or gardenia. In addition to the dramatic blooms, the flowers are highly fragrant and prized for such. Native to South East Asia, Jasminum sambac is an evergreen tropical bush with a controlled vining habit that requires little pruning beyond deadheading unless it is grown in a confined space. Prune your "Duke of Tuscany" jasmine during the active growth period when new shoots are visible, typically during the spring and summer, in most climates.

Instructions

    • 1

Control the height and spread of the shrub by trimming back the terminal growth of the stiff vines that emanate from the canopy of the shrub, as needed. Place all cuts just beyond a healthy lateral or leaf pair and do not remove more tissue than necessary as this will reduce flowering.

    • 2

Trim out any dead, diseased or otherwise damaged plant tissues throughout the year as needed, discarding them.

    • 3

Pluck or snip off spent flowers to keep the plant looking tidy and spur new flower production by preventing plant energies from being diverted to seed production. Use your fingers or secateurs to sever the faded blossom along the short stem that connects it to the plant branch.
