Look for branches that extend beyond the desired maximum height or width of the shrub. Trace the branches back to the main trunk and cut at a 45-degree angle next to the trunk using pruning shears. Cut off any other branches that extend too far out using the same method. Rely on these cuts to keep the shrub at its desired size.
Identify the oldest and longest branches. Cut off several of the oldest branches just above the soil line using pruning shears held at a 45-degree angle to the stems. Use this approach to give the shrub a renewed appearance and stimulate fresh growth.
Prune one of every three branches just above the soil line to stimulate bushy, fresh growth on older shrubs. Select the oldest branches to trim and make cuts at a 45-degree angle to the stem.
