Measure your property lines to create a base plan. These measurements help you decide what areas are large enough for Yaupon holly shrubs. Draw the landscape on a piece of graph paper and indicate on the base plan the measurements and square footage of the yard. Roughly draw immovable objects such as driveways, garages, the house and swimming pools.
Walk around the yard. Indicate on the base plan areas that receive full shade, partial shade and full sunlight. Yaupon holly shrubs grow best in partial shade to full sunlight areas. While walking around, decide if you want to use Yaupon holly shrubs as specimen plants, bordering shrubs or to frame the front of the house.
Draw on the base plan where you want to plant Yaupon holly trees. Look out from the windows inside the home to see if you can see these areas. It is important for gardeners to design their landscape so that it is visible from inside of the home.
Place the shrub in its container in the areas that you want to plant. Stand back to get an idea if the placement works for your tastes, blends in with the rest of the landscape or meets a need such as creating privacy.
Dig a hole that is twice the size of the root ball and at the same depth as the holly was planted in its container. Place the holly inside of the hole and pack soil around its base. To create a hedge, space plants 18 to 30 inches apart. Avoid placing holly trees too close to any structure. Yaupon hollies grow to a width of eight to 12 feet.
