Insert the spade or shovel 1 to 2 feet away from the base of the plant. Dig around the palmetto in a circle, pushing the spade deep into the ground.
Pull back on the handle to lift and loosen the roots from the ground. If the roots are deeper in the ground, pour water under the root ball so that it soaks into the ground. This will loosen up the roots, allowing you to remove the root ball easily.
Lift the root ball out of the ground with your shovel. You may want to enlist the help of a friend with this job. Your helper can either insert another shovel or spade beneath the root ball to help lift the palmetto out of the hole, or grasp the stem and pull the palmetto up from the hole.
Place the root ball onto a tarp or in a cart for easier moving. If transplanting, have the new hole dug and ready for the palmetto.
