How to Transplant Torch Glow Bougainvillea

Torch Glow is a bougainvillea cultivar that grows into a free-standing shrub that is approximately 6 to 8 feet tall and 3 feet wide. It is a difficult plant to transplant; however, if your bougainvillea is small and less than one year old, it is possible to transplant. Water it thoroughly one to two days before you transplant it to hydrate it, reduce the likelihood of shock and improve its chances of survival. Transplant Torch Glow bougainvillea in the spring before new growth.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the soil in an area of your landscape that receives a minimum of six hours of sunlight each day. This is a good place to grow the Torch Glow bougainvillea, which prefers morning sun and some afternoon shade. Turn over the soil 8 to 10 inches deep with a hoe, spade or tiller and incorporate approximately 3 inches of compost, leaf mold, peat moss or another organic material.

    • 2

Dig around your Torch Glow bougainvillea about 4 inches away from stems to ensure you get as much of the roots as possible. Dig down about 6 to 8 inches before cutting under the plant. Use a garden fork if possible; it is less likely to damage the roots than a shovel or spade will. Because the roots do not adhere to the soil well, the soil will likely fall away.

    • 3

Place the plant in the shade and wrap a wet piece of burlap around the roots. This is only temporary while you quickly get the hole ready to transplant your bougainvillea.

    • 4

Dig a hole that is large enough to accommodate the Torch Glow bougainvillea roots you just dug up. Plant it to the same depth as it was planted in its previous location. Carefully place the roots in the hole so they are not bunched up or turned upward.

    • 5

Pack the soil gently around the Torch Glow bougainvillea's roots. Afterward, water it with 1 inch of water. Do not let the soil around the plant dry out for the next month or two.
