How to Landscape With Helleri Holly

The ‘Helleri’ holly, also known as Dwarf Japanese holly or Heller holly, is a hardy shrub that reaches heights of 3 to 6 feet with a possible 8-foot spread when fully mature. The growth rate of ‘Helleri’ is slow, but worth the wait if you live within the shrub's favored USDA hardiness zones of 5B through 8A. These showstoppers produce dense, deep-green foliage that is ideal for cluster planting in the backyard landscape, be it shade or full sun.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant Helleri holly around your home's foundation or under windows. Because the holly remains short in stature, there are no worries that it will block your window view. Also, opt for locations where the holly can act as a border plant.

    • 2

Shovel holes twice as wide as the holly’s nursery pots, and just as deep. Ideal spacing for ‘Helleri’ holly is 36 to 60 inches, so dig accordingly.

    • 3

Set one holly bush in each hole making sure that all foliage is above the soil line, with roots below. Water-in each holly bush with a garden hose, saturating the soil to 1 inch. Uphold this level of moisture for the first growing season with weekly watering when rain is insufficient.

    • 4

Trim the ‘Helleri’ holly as needed. While heavy pruning is not a necessity, you may choose to perform a trimming to spruce up the appearance of the holly bushes. This is best done during the early spring while the shrubs are still dormant, using a pair of pruning shears or clippers.

    • 5

Complement the look of the landscape by spreading a layer of bark chips around each Helleri holly. A 3-inch layer of bark chips in the color of your choice will add interest and improve water retention around the shrubs.

    • 6

Add a layered look to the landscape by planting larger plants such as Butterfly Bush or Nandina around the ‘Helleri’ holly. Annual flowers add a splash of color against Heller holly’s green leaves, just be sure to check the nursery tag on chosen flowers for spacing requirements.
