Growing Azara Microphylla

Azara microphylla, commonly called box leaf azara, is a large shrub native to South America. The shrub grows best in full sun as well as partly shaded locations, where it develops attractive foliage and inflorescence that enhances the appearance of home landscapes. Growing azara microphylla is a simple process in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 7 through 9.
  1. Description

    • Azara microphylla is an evergreen shrub that grows in the under-story of Chilean forests. The plant has a slow growth rate and can grow up to 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide when mature. The tree has fanlike branches that are covered with attractive, small, glossy foliage; the species' name, microphylla, means small leaves. Box leaf azara develops small yellow flowers in early spring. The flowers cover the tree and produce a sweet fragrance similar to vanilla.

    Site Selection and Preparation

    • Azara microphylla grows best in light, humus-rich soils in full sun to partial shade in home gardens. The plants produce more flowers in bright locations but also thrive in shaded areas in your landscape. Plant azara microphylla along south-facing walls to help protect the foliage from wind burn. The plant does not have high nutrient demands and is easy to grow in basic garden soils. Incorporate peat soil or organic compost into the planting site to improve soil drainage.

    Planting

    • Dig a hole in the planting site large enough to accommodate the root ball of the specimen you are planting. Azara microphylla are one of the most commonly grown species of azara's and are readily available from many nurseries. Plant your azara microphylla in spring to the same planting depth as the nursery container, back fill the soil around the plant and water thoroughly to settle the roots.

    Care

    • Azara microphylla grows best with periodic watering to maintain an average soil moisture. The plant may wilt and loose its foliage if the soil is too moist or too dry. Azara microphylla can develop leggy, sprawling growth in soils with high nutrient levels. Prune the plant regularly to maintain a formal, attractive appearance. Established plants can be pruned back to the ground, if needed, to encourage a more attractive growth habit.
