How to Plant Gold Mound Duranta

Duranta are semi-tropical members of the verbena family used for landscaping in the wettest, warmest areas of the United States. These easy-case shrubs are planted as ornamentals and worked into loose hedges. Breeders have recently introduced varieties in many sizes with green, gold or variegated foliage. Gold Mound, like the other durantas, is easy to plant and requires little care beyond regular pruning once it is established. It prefers loose, well-draining soil and full sun exposure.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant a single duranta by digging a hole 3 to 6 inches slightly wider and about 1 1/2 times deeper than the plant's pot. Fill the bottom of the hole with a mix of the soil removed from the hole and compost until the crown sits level with the ground. Fill around the root ball with the soil/compost mixture. Tamp the mixture with your hands so it fits snugly around the root ball.

    • 2

Plant a Gold Mound duranta hedge by digging individual holes along the path of the future hedge. Space holes 18 to 24 inches apart. Amend the soil with compost, and plant each bush carefully so that each plant's crown is at the soil line.

    • 3

Water both individual and hedge plantings weekly until the durantas are established. Mulch around each bush to help the plants retain moisture. Provide additional water during the hottest part of the summer. Trim spreading sections of Gold Mound duranta to the ground with hand pruners when it spreads beyond its allotted area.
