How to Save the Seed From a Cestrum Nocturnum

Cestrum nocturnum, also known as night jasmine, night blooming jasmine or night blooming jessamine, is a tropical, blooming shrub appropriate for growing in the warm climates of U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 10 and 11. The tubular, greenish-white flowers appear in spring and continue throughout most of the summer. In spite of the name, Cestrum nocturnum often blooms during the day. However, the sweet fragrance isn't released until evening. Harvesting seeds from the plant is a simple project.

Instructions

    • 1

Allow a few trumpet-shaped blooms to remain on the plant at the end of the summer blooming season. As the bloom wilts and turns dry, a pod forms at its base.

    • 2

Wait for the pods to dry until you can hear the seeds rattling inside. Don't wait too long, because the pods may split and expel the seeds.

    • 3

Harvest the pods and place them in a paper sack.

    • 4

Label the sack, noting the date the Cestrum nocturnum seeds were harvested. Place the paper sack in a cool, dry place until spring.

    • 5

Remove the pod from the sack. Open the pods and remove the seeds inside. The dry seeds are ready for planting.
