Fertilizing Calycanthus Floridus

Calycanthus floridus, also known as sweetshrub and Carolina allspice, thrives in the warm climates of the southern United States. This shrub grows up to 6 feet tall and nearly as wide, providing an attractive natural shape suitable for informal plantings and woodland gardens. C. floridus prefers mildly acidic soil and requires minimal fertilization to produce healthy foliage and flowers. Proper application of the fertilizer is just as important as supplying the correct nutrients.

Instructions

    • 1

Test the soil in early spring, following the instructions in a pH testing kit. C. floridus grows best with mildly acidic pH between 6.1 and 6.5.

    • 2

Sprinkle a granular slow-release fertilizer around the base of the shrub, six to 12 inches away from the main trunk. Use a fertilizer that supplies the nutrients recommended by the soil test. For soil with a pH higher than preferred, apply a fertilizer formulated for azaleas and other acid-loving plants.

    • 3

Water the soil immediately after fertilizing so the nutrients can absorb into the root zone. Rinse any fertilizer dust from the lower foliage.

    • 4

Top-dress the soil beneath the shrub canopy with 1 to 2 inches of compost. The compost improves the soil quality and nutrition.
