Germinating a Melaleuca Thymifolia

Melaleuca thymifolia, known commonly as thyme-leaf melaleuca or thyme-leaf honey-myrtle, is a low-growing evergreen shrub native to Australia. This shrub is enjoyed for its attractive pink flowers, aromatic leaves, site adaptability and relatively few maintenance requirements. Thyme-leaf melaleuca is considered fairly easy to propagate, as it can be grown readily from cuttings and seeds do not require pretreatment. Harvest the small seeds correctly and place them in a suitable environment to encourage germination.

Instructions

    • 1

Harvest and store the seed. Remove mature seed capsules from the plant and put them in a bag to keep indoors until the capsules open to release the fine powdery seeds.

    • 2

Prepare the germinating media and container. A suitable germinating media must be well-drained but able to retain moisture and have low fertility. You can buy a germinating media mixture or create one by mixing equal parts finely shredded pine bark, peat moss and sand or perlite. Choose from a number of different types of containers, ranging from old pots or containers to covered chambers specifically for germinating seeds. Clean and sterilize containers.

    • 3

Sow the Melaleuca thymifolia seeds. Sprinkle the seeds evenly across the surface of the media and gently pat them down to ensure they are solidly in contact with the media.

    • 4

Mist the surface of the media using a container with a gentle spray nozzle or other suitable mister. Mist the seeds throughout the germination period whenever the media appears dry or condensation fails to appear on the inside of the plastic or glass covering in the morning.

    • 5

Cover the container with a plastic or glass cover or enclose it in a plastic bag to help maintain high humidity.

    • 6

Place the container in a favorable environment until germination occurs. Keep it in a bright area but out of direct sunlight. Maintain a temperature between about 65 and 75 degrees.
