How to Prune Sweet Pea Bushes

The flowering annual sweet pea (Lathryus odoratus) grows well in most climates. Sweet pea bush varieties grow shorter than the more vine-like varieties, allowing them to take on the shape of a low, loosely growing bush if they aren't trained to a support. These sweet peas reach only up to 3 feet tall and are suitable for flower beds, borders and containers. Light pruning keeps the plants looking their best. A trim also maintains the shape and size of the sweet pea bush so it doesn't split open or sprawl over the bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Pinch back the main stems when the plants are 8 to 10 inches tall. Pinch each stem right above the topmost leaf or bud. The plant stem branches at the bud after pinching, resulting in a fuller and more bushy form.

    • 2

Cut or pinch off the old flowers after they wilt. Remove any seed pods that begin to form. Bush sweet peas primarily bloom in early spring, but dead flower removal can help extend the blooming period.

    • 3

Trim back any overgrown, weak stems that fall over or begin to sprawl. Cut these back to a bud or leaf at the desired height. Remove no more than a third of the plant's height when trimming back.
