How to Trim Spiraea Trilobata

Spiraea trilobata, one of many varieties of the spirea shrub, produces lush white blossoms in mid-spring, and grows to a mature height of up to 4 feet and a width of 5 feet. It grows successfully in USDA growing zones 3 through 7. Keep this spirea shrub healthy and vibrant by trimming according to its bloom schedule. With proper pruning, the shrub should produce healthy blooms each year.

Instructions

    • 1

Clip off each blossom immediately after it fades and discard the removed blooms in the bucket. Deadheading the spirea encourages continued blossoming and keeps the shrub attractive.

    • 2

Trim the outer perimeter of the shrub immediately after it finishes blooming in the spring. Remove up to one-third of the stem length to shape the spirea attractively and to control the size.

    • 3

Clip off any older, unhealthy stems on the base of the shrub that are not producing actively. These stems usually lack the vigorous foliage, and they may appear slightly gray compared to more vibrant newer stems with plentiful leaves and a richer brown color.
