How to Prune a Clover Bush

The clover bush (Lespedeza thunbergii), more commonly called the Thunberg bush clover, is a deciduous shrub that belongs to the pea family (Fabaceae). Clover bushes feature bluish-green trifoliate leaves that look similar to clovers. Drooping racemes of white, pink or rosy purple flowers bloom in late summer and early autumn. The supple branches arch downward to form a fountain-like effect that adds interest to winter landscapes. Clover bushes need only minimal pruning to maintain optimal health and form.

Instructions

    • 1

Prune your bush clover in the early spring before the new growth emerges. Cut the branch tips down to a desired level to establish the height of your shrub. Start pruning at the top of your bush and work your way down to the lower branches.

    • 2

Locate any branches that cross or rub against another branch. Use hand shears to trim off the weaker branches at the base of the stem.

    • 3

Pluck spent flowers and loose leaves from the canopy throughout your bush clover's growing season. Trim off any errant branches to keep it looking tidy.

    • 4

Inspect the branches on your bush clover once a month for disease and damage. Cut out any browning, dying or dead plant tissue. Discard your prunings immediately to prevent the spread of plant diseases.

Hard prune the bush in the winter. Use pruning loppers to cut off all branches to about 6 inches from the ground. This helps promote new shoot growth the following spring.
