Juniper Bushes for Privacy Screen

If you want to increase your yard's privacy without installing a fence, plant juniper shrubs. These adaptable evergreens grow in a range of sizes, forms and colors -- from dark green to yellow-gold -- all with dense foliage that provides year-round screening. Junipers also block unwanted sounds and create a living fence. With more than 170 species and varieties from which to choose, select the junipers that best match your planting site's U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zone. Most junipers prefer sunny sites with well-drained soil.
  1. Dark Green Foliage

    • Create a dark green screen of foliage with the "Sea Green" juniper (Juniperus chinensis "Sea Green"). Hardy in USDA zones 4 to 9, this shrub grows to 6 feet tall with an 8-foot spread. Its ascending branches are covered with dark green foliage that gets even darker during the winter. The "Emerald Sentinel" Eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana "Emerald Sentinel") also has dark green foliage. This pyramid-shaped shrub grows up to 20 feet tall with an 8-foot spread and is hardy in USDA zones 3 to 9. The "Canaertii" cultivar also has dark green foliage, but can reach heights up to 25 feet.

    Bright Green Foliage

    • For bright green foliage, choose a "Hetzii Columnaris" Chinese juniper (Juniperus chiniensis "Hetzii Colunaris"). This upright shrub grows 15 to 25 feet tall with a 6-foot spread. It's hardy in USDA zones 4 to 9. The "Cologreen" Rocky Mountain juniper (Juniperus scopulorum "Cologreen") also has a 6-foot spread. With its thick bright green foliage and dense branches, this cultivar makes a thick privacy screen. "Cologreen" junipers are hardy in USDA zones 3 to 9.

    Silver-Blue Foliage

    • For a change from the sea of green found in many landscapes, plant one of the silver-blue junipers. These include the "Gray Gleam" Rocky Mountain juniper (Juniperus scopulorum "Gray Gleam"), a columnar shrub that slowly grows to 15 feet tall and half as wide. Hardy in USDA zones 4 to 9, this shrub has dense branches covered with silvery, gray-blue needles. Another Rocky Mountain juniper cultivar, "Moonglow," reaches 20 feet tall and has a pyramid shape. This low-maintenance juniper has silvery foliage. The "Pathfinder" juniper (Juniperus scopulorum "Pathfinder") is hardy in USDA zones 5 to 9 and grows quickly to 20 feet tall. It's prized for its flat blue-gray foliage.

    Yellow-Gold Foliage

    • Several juniper cultivars have yellow or gold foliage that adds a bright splash of color to the yard. These include the "Golden Flash" and "Gold Tip," both cultivars of the singleseed juniper (Juniperus squamata). Both grow to 8 feet tall and have blue-foliage with yellow or gold variegation. These junipers are hardy in USDA zones 4 to 7. The "Old Gold" Chinese juniper (Juniperus chiniensis "Old Gold") grows slowly to 5 feet tall and has gold foliage that keeps its yellow hues well into the winter. "Old Gold" junipers are hardy in USDA zones 4 to 9.
