How to Care for Macho Ferns

With the word “Macho” as part of the name, you know this is not your typical fern. The Macho fern (Nephrolepis biserrata “Macho”) grows to a massive 3 to 6 feet in both width and height in ideal conditions. This plant is also commonly called broad and giant sword fern because of its size. Grown in landscapes in U.S. Department of Agricultural plant hardiness zones 9 to 11, Macho ferns grow well in hanging baskets in all areas of the country and last for years with the proper care.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the Macho fern in a spot with bright light, but not full afternoon sunlight. These ferns thrive on porches, balconies, decks or outside areas with afternoon shade during the growing season. Indoor lighting is typically insufficient.

    • 2

Water the Macho fern well and then until the soil dries slightly before watering again from spring through fall. The amount of water needed varies depending on the container’s size, the fern and the surroundings. Never leave the fern sitting in water.

    • 3

Apply a water-soluble balanced fertilizer, such as 20-20-20, starting in the spring when new fronds emerge. Diluting the fertilizer to 1/2 or 1/4 strength to avoids burning the roots. Reapply the fertilizer through the growing season but stop feeding the fern in the fall.

    • 4

Bring the Macho fern indoors when freezing temperatures are expected. Keep it in a bright spot and regularly water it until spring. Move the fern back outside after the chance of frost in your area has passed.

    • 5

Repot the fern in the spring when the plant outgrows the present pot. Use a pot one size larger and a top-quality, soilless, high-peat potting mix. Plant the Macho fern in the new pot at the same depth in the soil as previously grown.
