How to Remove Gnats on Plants

Gnats are annoying pests flying around your plants. They are difficult to kill with a fly swatter because of their small size. Although a gnat’s life span ranges from eight to 10 days, the more quickly the gnat problem is resolved, the better. Gnats can lay as many as 300 eggs in their lifetime. These eggs hatch in as little as three days.

Instructions

    • 1

Place plants that are attracting gnats in sunlight. Doing so dries out the plants, preventing gnats from being drawn to them. This is because gnats feed on the algae, fungus and decaying plant matter. They also prefer to lay their eggs in moist soil. Dry soil dissuades gnats from laying eggs in the soil and decreases the ability of any eggs laid in the soil to survive.

    • 2

Covering the top of the soil with peat moss discourages gnats from laying eggs in the soil.

    • 3

Placing sticky traps around the plants catches gnats that land nearby. This traps the gnats, preventing them from laying eggs in the plants.

    • 4

Pour cooking wine or fruit juice into a glass and place it near the plants. Gnats are drawn to these liquids and drown in them.

    • 5

Slice raw potato into ½-inch pieces and place them in the plant’s soil. The gnats are drawn to the potato and lay eggs on it instead of the soil. Discarding these potato pieces every few days helps control the gnat population.
