Wait until late winter to plant the Black Pearl pepper seeds indoors. It typically takes 20 to 24 weeks from planting until the plants produce the first berries. Planting early ensures a long growing season.
Fill a seed tray with bagged potting soil or seed starting mix. Add another 1/2 to 1 cup of soil to the top center of the tray to create a mound. This mound assists with air flow and prevents mildew growth.
Create 1/2-inch-deep holes in the top of the soil with the tip of a pencil. Space each hole at least 1 inch apart.
Insert a Black Pearl pepper seed into each hole, then sprinkle additional soil on top of them to fill the holes.
Fill a spray bottle with lukewarm water, and spray the soil until it is moist.
Place the seed tray in an indoor location near a window that has a constant temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit. If your home does not stay this temperature, place a heating mat under the seed tray, and leave it on constantly.
Water the top of the soil daily with the spray bottle until the seedlings emerge from the soil. Turn the tray a half turn daily, so the seedlings grow straight.
Plant the Black Pearl pepper seedling outdoors when they reach 1 to 2 inches tall. Choose a sunny site with good drainage. Space the seedlings 18 to 20 inches apart.
