How to Build a Teepee Trellis

Teepee trellises work well as supports for climbing plants, such as beans or flowering vines. The term teepee is spelled as “TP” and “tipi” by some home gardeners. It doesn’t matter how you spell it, a teepee trellis is typically inexpensive to make and not hard to put together. Build it in the garden or landscape at the same time you plant, or before planting, to keep from damaging the roots of growing plants.

Measuring tape
Six 8-foot-long bamboo poles
Rubber mallet
14-inch zip ties or twine

Instructions

  Measure and mark a 4-foot-diameter circle for the base of the teepee trellis.

  Space six bamboo poles evenly around the outer edge of the circle. Pound each pole 1 1/2 to 2 feet into the ground, inserting them at an angle so that you don't have to bend them.

  Pull the bamboo poles together at the top and tie them using a plastic zip tie or twine.

  Space teepee trellises eight feet apart when using more than one in a row. Lay a slightly longer bamboo pole between them, wedged among the tops of the bound poles, for added support.

  Grow your plants around the base of the teepee.
