How to Germinate Timothy Seed

Timothy is a perennial grass that can reach over 3 feet tall and is commonly used in grazing fields for livestock. Timothy can be planted alone or, if you are growing a mixed grass for hay, with alfalfa. It is a quick-germinating grass seed that requires little maintenance. Plant your timothy in the fall between September and November or in the early spring. It will not germinate well if you plant it in hot weather.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare a planting site that is well drained and gets full sun. Pull out all the weeds and loosen the soil to a depth of 10 inches with a tiller. Rake the surface so it is even.

    • 2

Fill a seed spreader with the timothy seed and set it to broadcast at a rate of 10 to 15 pounds per acre. Walk the prepared seed bed in even lap to broadcast the seed.

    • 3

Rake soil over the seeds so they are covered by a depth of 1/2 inch. Apply a 16-04-08 fertilizer at a rate of 250 pounds per acre, according to the package directions.

    • 4

Water the seed bed until the soil settles. Continue watering frequently enough to keep the soil moist to the touch until germination.
