How to Germinate a Bean in a Jar

Germinating a bean in a jar gives kids a chance to observe the germination process without the fuss and mess of potting soil or seed starter. This simple project serves well to supplement the science curriculum in classrooms or home schools, and makes it easy for little ones to examine both roots and emerging leaves. Add a science journal for youngsters to record their observations and you can integrate literacy skills as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold a paper towel in half and moisten it with a spray bottle. Allow children to moisten the towel by spraying it with a spray bottle. Getting kids actively involved promotes enthusiasm and activates learning.

    • 2

Place two to four beans on the moist paper towel. Space the beans so that they are not touching each other to allow room for roots to grow.

    • 3

Roll the paper towel around the bean seeds to create a cylinder. Place the paper towel in the jar.

    • 4

Add an inch of water to the bottom of the jar. This keeps the paper towel moist as it wicks the water from the bottom of the jar.

    • 5

Place the jar in a sunny location that receives bright indirect light. Direct sunlight may heat the jar and damage the seeds.

    • 6

Check the bean seeds for germination by removing the paper towel. Unroll the towel gently and observe the seeds. Encourage children to discuss what they observe or to record their observations in their science journals.
