How to Prune a Foxtail Fern

The foxtail fern, also known as the asparagus fern, is an evergreen perennial that originates from the lily family. This plant can produce long green stems and feathery leaves. The plant itself is usually between 2 and 3 feet tall and roughly 3 feet wide. The fronds produced by this plant are cone shaped like a fox’s tail. Overall, foxtail ferns are relatively easy to care for and require minimal trimming and pruning.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the foxtail fern for unsightly or uneven stems and leaves. Prune all stems with yellow or brown leaves.

    • 2

Raise the stem you would like to prune and follow it to the base of the plant. Snip the stem roughly 2 inches above the base of the plant and remove the severed stem.

    • 3

Cut away half an inch from the top of each stem to promote faster growth and a fuller foxtail fern.
