How to Care for a Purple Velvet Plant Cutting

The purple velvet plant, also known as the purple passion vine, is a houseplant that has green foliage with a fuzzy purple covering. The plant is propagated easily from stem cuttings that root quickly with little maintenance. The cuttings should include a leaf node, and should be taken from the last 1 1/2 to 3 inches of a stem. Cuttings can be taken at any time of year, and can be grown in regular seed-starting trays.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a potting mixture that is 1/2 peat moss and 1/2 a combination of bark and perlite. Fill the cells of a seed-starting tray with the potting mix.

    • 2

Dip the last 1/2 inch of the cutting in a rooting hormone. Insert that end of the cutting into the potting mix.

    • 3

Water the potting mix until it settles. Set the tray in a bright spot with a 75-degree F ambient temperature.

    • 4

Fill a spray bottle with water. Mist the cuttings lightly once a day. Mist the soil whenever it becomes dry. The cuttings will root in up to two weeks, and will be ready for planting in three to four weeks.
