How to Germinate Muscadine Seeds

Muscadines are a warm season fruit that is typically grown in the southern part of the United States. They are a type of grape that is generally grown from seed for easy fruit production. For the plants to grow successfully, the seeds are first gathered from the fruit and germinated. Germination can take three to five weeks from the time the seeds are gathered until the time it takes for new plants to begin sprouting.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the seeds from the muscadines. The easiest method of removal is to eat the fruit while saving the seeds.

    • 2

Rinse the seeds with cool water. Rub the seeds gently under the running water with your fingers to help remove stuck-on pieces of fruit.

    • 3

Spread the seeds out on a single layer on paper towels to allow the seeds to dry out. Leave the seeds in an open area for at least 24 hours.

    • 4

Fill a freezer bag half full with peat moss. Place the seeds inside the bag.

    • 5

Gently squeeze all of the air out of the bag and seal it.

    • 6

Place the bag into the vegetable drawer in your refrigerator for at least three months.

    • 7

Fill 4-inch pots up three-quarters of the way full with an all-purpose potting mix.

    • 8

Remove the seeds from the bag. Press three seeds down into the soil of each pot. The seeds should go a 1/4 inch into the soil.

    • 9

Mist the soil with enough water to make the soil damp. Place the pots in a bright sunny location.

    • 10

Keep the soil moist by misting gently every two to three days. The plants will begin to grow in approximately two weeks.
