How to Trim a Pittosporum

The Pittosporum plant is a popular landscape plant used throughout the United States. It is easy to grow in warm climates, although Pittosporum plants are capable of growing quite fast. For example, if left to grow wild, these plants may reach heights and widths of up to 15 feet. For this reason, it is important that you prune your Pittosporum plants regularly.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan to prune your Pittosporum plants in late winter before the spring growing season.

    • 2

Disinfect your pruning shears with a solution of 1 part household bleach and 10 parts water. Use the shears to cut away broken branches, atrophied branches and branches no longer producing flowers. When cutting the branches, make your cuts at a 45-degree angle at the base of the main stem of the plant.

    • 3

Cut the Pittosporum shrubs to the desired length and shape. Pittosporum is resilient and responsive to pruning, so you don’t have to worry about cutting too much away from the shrubs.

    • 4

Cut the shrubs down to heights of 6 inches to 1 foot if the they are especially thin or look weak. They will come back much fuller and healthy.
