How to Germinate Muhly Grass Seeds

The species of Muhlenbergia that is commonly referred to as “muhly grass” is capillaris. Favored for its pink, fluffy flower plumes, muhly is highly ornamental and not at all demanding, tolerating heat, drought and humidity. Muhly grass blooms in fall so it replaces the color you lose when the summer flowers fade. Muhly grass grows to a height of 4 feet with a 3-foot spread, and grows best within zones 6 through 10 on the U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zone Map. Germinate muhly grass seeds in winter.

Instructions

    • 1

Sow the muhly grass seeds on the surface of a quality seed starting soilless mix. Although it might be tempting to use standard potting soil or bargain-store mixes, a higher quality mix protects the seeds and seedlings from fungal pathogens that may kill them. Keep the mix moist at all times during germination.

    • 2

Cover the seed germination container with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator or outdoors, if the temperature remains between 24 and 39 degrees Fahrenheit. The muhly grass seeds must remain at this temperature for 12 weeks.

    • 3

Remove the plastic wrap from the germinating container and place the container on a heat mat set to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. The seeds need bright but indirect sunlight. Look for the grass to sprout within two weeks.
