How to Get a Philodendron Selloum to Grow Fast

Native to southern Brazil, Philodendron selloum is a large-leaved tropical foliage plant. It is often found as a house plant, but may be grown outdoors in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 9 to 11. The plant is a treelike member of the genus and may get 15 feet tall and wide in ideal conditions. Philodendrons are members of the Arum family and bear the characteristic large, glossy leaves which average 3 feet in length. Philodendrons prefer shade and are considered cold hardy and tolerant of brief exposure to frost. Philodendron selloum is a vigorous plant that will grow well with adequate moisture, lighting and nutrients.

Instructions

    • 1

Provide ideal growing conditions for the fastest growth of the Philodendron. Plant it in equal parts potting soil, sand and peat. Place the plant at the same level in the new pot as it was in the nursery pot.

    • 2

Water the plant when the soil drys out in the top 2 to 3 inches and keep it evenly moist. Do not allow the soil to become soggy and saturated or the plant will suffer. In winter, reduce watering by half when the plant is not actively growing. Increase water again in spring through fall for best growth.

    • 3

Use a plant mister daily on interior plant leaves to provide humidity. The plant needs to be placed in a medium light area. Ideal light levels are 47 to 70 percent shade.

    • 4

Keep temperatures at 70 to 80 degrees F. Use a heater if necessary to keep the area where the plant is growing warm. Nighttime temperatures need to be maintained at 60 degrees.

    • 5

Fertilize the plant four weeks after potting it up. Use a liquid fertilizer applied at the rate recommended by the manufacturer. Water it in well until moisture leaches out the drainage holes to incorporate it with the soil and prevent fertilizer burn.

    • 6

Wipe the leaves when they get dusty with a piece of lambs wool. This will encourage moisture intake by the stoma or pores in the leaves. Moisture and heat are the most important conditions to control when growing Philodendron selloum.
