How to Grow Mini White Fittonia

The fittonia plant also goes by the name of nerve plant and is a tropical species grown mostly for its foliage. The Mini White cultivar gets its name because the dark green leaves have so many white striations they appear completely white from afar. Mini fittonia plants are a tropical species that are native to Peru, and thus require high levels of moisture and humidity to thrive. Because of the high water needs, they are houseplants in the U.S.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a 6- to 8-inch plant pot half full of a peat-based potting soil mix and place the mini white fittonia plant into the center of it. Add more soil to the pot around the roots of the fittonia until covering them completely.

    • 2

Fill a dish with a single layer of gravel and place it under the pot. Fill the dish with water to increase the humidity near the plant.

    • 3

Place the plant pot in an indoor location that has bright levels of sunlight, but not directly next to a window that receives direct sunlight. Direct sunlight will burn the leaves and dry out the soil too quickly.

    • 4

Monitor the temperature near the pot to ensure that it remains above 60 degrees Fahrenheit at all times. During winter, ensure that nearby windows or doors do not create drafts on the pot.

    • 5

Water the soil every two to seven days to prevent the surface from drying out. When you water, use lukewarm distilled or purified water, since tap water often contains to much salt which can damage the plants.

    • 6

Apply a balanced water-soluble fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, once per month to supply nutrients to the soil. Use the dosage of fertilizer recommended on the packaging or bottle.

    • 7

Pull off any dead or yellow leaves that develop to improve the plant’s appearance. Watch for central flower stalks and prune them off immediately using hand pruners to direct nutrients to the foliage.
