How to Germinate Plant Seeds in Plastic Bags

Plant seeds require water to begin the germination process. Watching the germination progression is a valuable learning experiment for children and a method used by gardeners for sprouting plant seeds prior to planting or to see if seeds left from previous seasons are still viable. So whether you want to check old seeds, start new sprouts or teach your kids about germination, this can all be accomplished with a paper towel and a plastic bag.

Instructions

    • 1

Dampen a paper towel and remove any excess water. Fold the paper towel in half.

    • 2

Place the plant seeds on one side of the folded paper towel, evenly spaced.

    • 3

Fold the other side of the paper towel over the top of the seeds.

    • 4

Place the paper towel inside a plastic bag. Seal the bag’s opening partway to allow some air inside.

    • 5

Place the bag in a warm location, such as on top of the refrigerator.

    • 6

Check the paper towel daily and dampen it as needed to keep it moist.

    • 7

Watch for sprouting in a week or more, which varies depending on the type of plant seeds used.
