Instructions

  1. Outdoor Growing

    • 1

Choose a plot of garden in full sun to grow your watermelons and rake it to loosen the soil.

    • 2

Mix fertilizer or compost into the soil.

    • 3

Dig a hole in the ground that is 2 inches deep and 24 inches across in the ground. If digging multiple holes, dig them at least 6 feet apart.

    • 4

Form a ring around the edge of the hole using the dirt from the hole.

    • 5

Place two watermelon seeds in each hole.

    • 6

Cover each seed with 1 inch of soil.

    • 7

Regularly water the watermelons and make sure the ground stays moist.

    • 8

Rake gently around the holes to keep the ground surrounding the watermelons moist.

    • 9

Harvest the watermelons when the tendrils of the vines turn brown.

    Container Growing

    • 10

Place a large plastic container that is at least 15 inches across and 12 inches deep in a place in your yard that receives full sunlight.

    • 11

Poke holes in the bottom of the container using a hammer and nails to allow the soil to drain.

    • 12

Fill the container with planting soil or soil from your yard mixed with compost, leaving 2 inches at the top of the container.

    • 13

Dig a 1-inch hole in the middle of the dirt.

    • 14

Place two watermelon seeds in the hole. Use seeds from a miniature variety of watermelon.

    • 15

Lightly cover the seeds with 1 inch of soil.

    • 16

Regularly water the seeds and rake the soil in the container to keep it moist.

    • 17

Pick the watermelons when the part that rests on the soil is yellow.
