How to Re-Pot a Fern Plant With Rocks

Re-potting a fern plant with rocks is a great way to control how much water the plant gets. The rocks will allow a place at the bottom of the pot for excess water to drain. When the soil needs water again, it will soak up the water from the layer of rocks. This will help prevent your fern from becoming overwatered, which is one of the most common problems in house plants.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a pot with a diameter that is one-third to one-half the height of the fern plant.

    • 2

Fill the bottom of the pot with an inch or two of gravel. If the pot has a drainage hole with an overflow tray, align the gravel with the height of this tray.

    • 3

Put dampened potting soil into the pot until it is one-fourth of the way full.

    • 4

Lay the fern plant into the pot so that the roots spread out naturally.

    • 5

Continue filling the pot with potting soil until you are an inch from the top of the pot.

    • 6

Press down on the soil with your thumbs to gently compact the soil around the roots of the fern.

    • 7

Water the fern after planting. Any excess water will drain into the rocks at the bottom of the pot.

    • 8

Place the fern in a dimly lit area for several days while it adjusts to the new pot.
