How to Grow Emersed Dwarf Hairgrass

Dwarf hairgrass is commonly used in aquariums because it is capable of growing both fully and partially submerged in water. The grass's long green leaves and blanket-style growing pattern create an attractive addition to fish tank environments. Ideal growing conditions for emersed dwarf hairgrass include a soft substrate, moderate lighting and water temperature in the 70s to low 80s degrees F. Depending on environmental conditions, dwarf hairgrass may take up to three months to thrive.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the bottom of the plastic container with approximately 1 inch of potting soil.

    • 2

Pour water into the plastic container until it reaches the top of the potting soil layer.

    • 3

Plant the dwarf hairgrass into the wet potting soil and cover the plastic container with plastic wrap.

    • 4

Use tape to secure the plastic wrap to the sides of the container to prevent the moisture from evaporating. Place the covered container in sunlight or under growing lamps.

    • 5

Remove the plastic wrap and mist the dwarf hairgrass with fresh water once a week. Replace the plastic cover. Repeat weekly until the dwarf hairgrass grows into a full carpet layer.

    • 6

Lift out the dwarf hairgrass and gently rinse any excess potting soil off of the roots. Place in the bottom of your aquarium.
