How to Braid a Hanging Planter With Rope

It is easy to see and enjoy the beauty of a plant at eye level when it is gracefully suspended in a hanging planter. While hanging planters are not hard to find in a home improvement or home accessory store, there is something refreshingly special about making a homemade one with your own hands. Reminiscent of the macrame technique of knotting ropes together in repeating, decorative patterns, simple braids introduce a dimension of detail that makes the finished piece attractive. Grab some rope and start braiding a hanging planter.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut four 10-foot pieces of rope and one 5 1/2-foot piece.

    • 2

Gather the four 10-foot pieces of rope together and pull one end of the group of four ropes together through the metal ring.

    • 3

Lay the ropes with the ring on a work surface, and evenly fold the ropes in half with the metal ring at the point of the fold. This will yield eight ropes that are 5-feet long each.

    • 4

Grab and gather the ropes together just below the metal ring in one hand.

    • 5

Wrap one end of the 5 1/2-foot rope tightly around the ropes just below the metal ring. Wrap the rope a few times. Hold the ropes together.

    • 6

Separate the ropes into three groups of three. Braid the ropes together of the group that includes the rope used in Step 5 to secure the wrapped section. Braid each remaining group until the braids measure 2 feet long.

    • 7

Lay the braided planter on the work surface. Separate the bottom of each braid into two sections -- one section with one rope end and one section with two rope ends held together.

    • 8

Join a separated rope of one braid with a rope from the neighboring braid. Tie a knot right below the braid. Continue tying knots in the ropes this way until that row is complete.
It is very important not to skip over a braid and tie a knot with ropes that are not next to each other. By tying the knots properly, the hanging planter starts to take on a bowl or rounded shape.

    • 9

Tie another row of knots. Measure 6 inches down. Separate the ropes of each knot, and connect each rope with a rope emerging from a neighboring knot.

    • 10

Finish the hanging planter off with a large or wrap the ropes together. Gather all of the ropes together and tie a large knot, or cut another piece of rope, wrap it several times around the gathered ropes, and then tie a knot with the extra rope piece and one of the ropes in the bunch.

    • 11

Cut the ends of the ropes so they are all the same length. The end of the hanging planter will look like a large tassel.
