How to Cut Back a Kimberly Queen Fern

The Kimberly Queen fern is an upright-growing fern with sword-shaped fronds and a penchant for fast growth. The fern is often used as a decorative piece in gardens or in free-standing pots -- the length of its fronds making it unsuitable for use as a hanging plant -- and requires very little in the way of care. You will need to periodically prune away fronds from the plant to promote good growth and overall health of the fern.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify any fronds that need to be removed. Any dead or diseased fronds should be targeted, as well as any fronds that are "crunchy" or inflexible.

    • 2

Soak the blades of the pruning shears in alcohol to sterilize the cutting surface and reduce chances of introducing disease into the fern.

    • 3

Cut off the fronds at their base where they connect in to the main root ball. Continue removing fronds until just the green, healthy fronds are left.
