Key Stage 2 students study the names and functions of different parts of the plant. Students learn how the roots, leaves and stem work together to circulate water and minerals throughout the plants as well as about the parts of the plant that are used in reproduction. Students can explain both photosynthesis and the reproductive cycle by the end of their studies in this subject area.
Sequencing is very important in Key Stage 2. Students learn how a plant grows from seed to mature plant and what the steps are in between. They also learn about the plant's basic needs and what humans need to provide if they are growing green plants. Students should be able to put pictures in order of the plant's life cycle.
Key Stage 2 students learn how seeds become plants and what the plants do to reproduce. They are able to name all of the parts of the plant that are involved in reproduction and explain how reproduction works. They can explain the pollination process and where seeds come from, and explain how seeds germinate and eventually become new plants. Students can name male and female reproductive parts of plants.
Teachers can use a wide variety of activities to teach Key Stage 2 students about green plants. Sequencing cards are a popular option -- these cards show one of the processes students are trying to learn and the students must put them in order. Students may also need to draw or label diagrams, and in some cases teachers require students to plant seeds and keep track of the plant's growth in a seed diary over a particular period of time.
