How to Build a Hanging Basket Pulley

A pulley can make watering a hanging basket easier. Hanging baskets displayed in a garden area or suspended from a deck can give the area an extra burst of color or a special decorative effect. A simple pulley system can eliminate the need for a step stool or ladder when watering a hanging basket full of flowers or plants. You can install a hanging basket pulley in a short amount of time, with little expense.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the area where the basket will be hung; this is the location where you'll attach the top of the pulley. Measure the height from the hanging position to the ground. Cut the nylon rope two times that height.

    • 2

Insert a drill bit into the power drill, ensuring your bits are the same size as the screws included with the pulley's mounting bracket. Drill a hole in the determined location; stop when the bit will not go any further. Insert a screwdriver bit into the drill, and screw in the pulley with the screws.

Determine the location where the cord cleat will be placed. The cleat is the piece of steel or other sturdy material around which you wrap the pulley cord to stabilize it. Mount the cleat vertically on a post or wall, far enough below the pulley that the cord will wrap around it easily. Drill holes with the proper size drill bit; screw the cleat into place.

Place the center of the nylon rope into the indention on top of the pulley. Tie one end of the rope to the basket. Pull the plant to the desired height with the other end and secure the rope by wrapping it around the cleat several times, following a figure eight pattern.
