How to Prune Red Nandina and Heavenly Bamboo

Nandina, also known as heavenly bamboo for its bamboo-like leaves, has smooth stems and makes an attractive shrub for your garden. Much like an authentic bamboo plant, without proper pruning, it will start to grow out of control. Your first experience pruning nandina may be scary because of the extent of the pruning, but this will keep it looking attractive. Prune the plant annually to promote healthy growth.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a pair of heavy gloves to protect your hands from splinters. Long sleeves are advisable, too.

    • 2

Examine your nandina bamboo for the tallest stems. These are the first ones to remove in the pruning process, so it's easier to reach the smaller stems.

    • 3

Cut the stems with shears one-third of the way from the base of the plant. Set aside the cut pieces. Cut down the other branches to the approximate size of the first.
