How to Fix a Tear in a Down Comforter

A rip in a comforter or bedspread is annoying, especially if it's an expensive down comforter. Repairing a rip in a down comforter is far more affordable than taking the blanket to a seamstress or clothing tailor to sew up the damage. Fixing a tear in a down comforter not only fixes the unsightly error, but it also gives you the opportunity to introduce embellishment to the blanket.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Thread your needle with triple the length of string than the length of the rip itself. This assures you have enough for sewing and tying off the thread. Select a thread color that best matches your comforter.

    • 2

Gently pinch together the edges of the rip, lining up the edges as much as possible for an even stitch.

    • 3

Complete a simple hook stitch to connect the ends, correcting the tear in the down comforter. Meanwhile, plug in an iron and let it heat on the highest setting for five minutes.

    • 4

Place an iron-on applique of your choice down over the tear, making sure to choose one large enough to cover the entire stitched area. Any type of applique is suitable and a matter of preference, depending on your needs.

    • 5

Apply the iron firmly to the surface of the applique. Rub over the entire surface of the patch in circular motions for two minutes. Turn off the iron and then let the area cool for 15 minutes.
