How to Decorate Plastic Barrel Planters

A plastic barrel planter is a larger version of a traditional plant pot. Designed to hold more substantial plants, plastic barrel planters typically feature a wood grain texture for a rustic look. A plastic barrel planter might be a better investment than a wood version in that it weighs less for easier transport and won't mildew or rot. You can decorate the plastic planter to reflect changing seasons or holidays using basic craft items.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash a plain plastic planter with warm, soapy water to remove any dirt or dust. Dry the planter thoroughly with a clean towel. Cover the work surface with newspaper to prevent any paint stains.

    • 2

Cover the entire outside surface of the planter with acrylic paint. You can choose a paint color to reflect your home decor, or pick one to represent a specific holiday, such as orange and black for Hallowee. Let the paint to dry according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Apply a second coat of paint to the planter.

Use stencils and acrylic paint to decorate the planter. Use a paint color that contrasts well with the planter's main color. Choose stencils featuring holiday shapes, such as a pumpkin for Halloween or stars for Fourth of July. Pick a flower shape for a year-round look. Hold the stencil against the planter and use paint to transfer the design to the surface. Place one large design in the middle of the front of the planter, or create several around the perimeter. Let the paint thoroughly dry.

Tie a grosgrain ribbon into a bow directly under the rim or around the middle of the planter for an added touch.
