Care Instructions for Sempervivum

Sempervivum is a genus of succulent sometimes referred to as hens and chicks or house leeks. The perennial plant grows in rosettes and flowers in full sun. Common species include S. arachnoideum, S. tectorum and S. montanum. Like other succulents, such as cacti, sempervivum require dry conditions, well-drained soil and very little maintenance. They can be grown in containers or soil. In fact, they are so easy to grow that their Latin name translates to "live forever."

Instructions

    • 1

Plant sempervivum in well-drained soil, such as rocky or gravelly soil or a porous potting soil. Sempervivum grow best in full sun, although they will tolerate partial shade.

    • 2

Water sempervivum about once a month, letting the soil dry out between watering. Provide more water in the summer than winter, but don't over water or plants may develop rust or crown rot.

    • 3

Fertilize sempervivum very lightly during the growing months. Use about 1/4 of the amount recommended on a houseplant fertilizer label and fertilize no more than three or four times a year.
