How to Inject Fertilizers to Acidify Water

Plants, flowers and trees bring beauty and color to home gardens and grow in a range of sizes, colors and varieties. All plants have preferences in regard to site, sun and soil, and some plants and flowers have additional preferences with regard to nutrition. Acid-loving plants like roses, azaleas, hydrangeas, rhododendrons and camellias enjoy rich, acidic fertilizers for blooming and growth. Use water-soluble fertilizer mixes to inject acidic nutrition into water for these plants.

      Use acidic, nitrogen-heavy, water-soluble fertilizer for acid-loving plants. Look for balanced 10-10-10 or 12-12-12 fertilizer, or heavier fertilizer like 33-0-0 or 10-5-5. High nitrogen content indicates richer, more acidic fertilizer. These fertilizers may also be labeled as azalea and rhododendron fertilizer or fertilizer for acid-loving plants.

      Mix the fertilizer with water in a jar, bowl or watering can to contain it. Follow the manufacturer's directions with regard to amount of water and fertilizer. Mix well with a spoon or stir stick.

      Use the mixture for weekly waterings. Most water-soluble fertilizers work best with weekly or biweekly applications.
