How to Mix Boston Ferns With Kimberly Queen Ferns

Ferns evolved around 300 million years ago and are among the oldest plants on Earth. Unlike flowering plants, ferns are primitive and need a moist environment to reproduce. Because of this requirement for moisture, ferns grow best in cool, shady spots. Some, like the Kimberly Queen fern, are more tolerant of sunlight than others, like the Boston fern. Their differences make the Kimberly Queen and the Boston fern ideal planting companions. Mixing them in the interior or exterior landscape allows gardeners to grow ferns in sunny and shady locations. They are similar in appearance, with dark green, sword-like fronds.

Instructions

  1. Planting

    • 1

Mix 50-percent peat and 50-percent coarse perlite to use as your potting medium.

    • 2

Fill the bottom of the pot with enough dirt to raise your fern to the level at which it was planted in the nursery planter. This planting level applies to both Boston ferns and Kimberly Queens.

    • 3

Place the fern in the pot and fill with the potting medium. Do not tamp the mix or you will compromise its ability to drain freely. Fill the pot with mix, water it, wait for the mix to settle, and then add more mix. Repeat until the pot is filled with potting mix to the desired level.

    Indoor Placement and Care

    • 4

Place Boston ferns in a north or east facing window where they will get bright, indirect light. In the winter, Boston ferns require two hours of direct sunlight a day.

    • 5

Place Kimberly Queen ferns at south, east or west windows; they can tolerate direct sun for part of the day.

    • 6

Water both Boston ferns and Kimberly Queen ferns regularly. Boston ferns should be watered when the top half to 1 inch of the potting medium is dry. Kimberly Queen ferns placed near sunny windows require more frequent watering. Water Kimberly Queens when just the soil surface is dry. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to pool in the drainage dish. Discard excess water after 10 minutes.

    Outdoor Placement and Care

    • 7

Place Boston ferns in dappled shade. Boston ferns should only be placed outside during the summer months.

    • 8

Place Kimberly Queen ferns in part sun to dappled shade. They can withstand a few hours of direct morning sunlight. Bury pots, cut fronds to a few inches above the soil line and mulch heavily during the winter, or move the pot indoors.

    • 9

Check moisture levels frequently. Plants lose more moisture in warm weather. Water Boston ferns when the top half to 1 inch of potting medium is dry. Water Kimberly Queens when the potting mix surface is dry.
