How to Cut Fresh Chinese Bamboo

Chinese bamboo has a distinctive look that is well liked for its simple, natural beauty, and can be found in a variety of settings, from an Asian garden to a small pot inside a home. Bamboo plants grow in reed-like stalks -- or culms -- that shoot up from the ground. Bamboo owners must periodically prune or cut their bamboo plants to maintain the plants' aesthetics and keep them healthy. Whether you'd like to trim back a tree or collect fresh bamboo for an indoor decoration, it is easy to cut Chinese bamboo.

Instructions

    • 1

Look over the Chinese bamboo plant, taking note of any specific areas that you'd like to cut. Determine the lengths of the bamboo pieces you wish to cut.

    • 2

Hold the culm firmly with one hand. Using the pruning shears, snip thin stalks just above the node, which looks like a bump on the culm.

    • 3

Saw thick bamboo culms using a fine-toothed saw. Hold the blade of the saw just above a node on the stalk and then saw back and forth until the top of the bamboo falls down.
