Replanting Orange Sprouts

If you plant orange seeds, several orange sprouts may shoot up from the seeds. If you planted them in small seed pots, you’ll have to replant the healthy shoots into a larger container. Note, though, that it takes seven or more years for an orange tree to produce fruit.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the orange sprouts. Three sprouts may grow from one seed. If this happens, the two tall ones on the side will produce fruit. The middle, weaker sprout probably won't produce fruit and should be pulled and discarded.

    • 2

Fill a 1 quart planting pot with a well draining, loamy or sandy potting soil. Leave 1 inch of space between the top of the soil and the pot’s rim. Moisten the soil with water before replanting the orange sprouts.

    • 3

Remove the orange sprouts from their current container when they're approximately 6 to 8 inches tall. Use your hands and be careful not to damage the roots. You can keep some of the soil intact around the roots.

    • 4

Plant one orange sprout in the center of a pot at the same depth as it was in the previous container. Place the container in full sun and keep the soil moist. When the orange sprout matures into a young tree and outgrows its container, replant it again in a gallon container or directly outdoors in a warm climate.
