Handmade Metal Planters

Handmade metal planters add a distinctive touch to your landscape design without costing a lot of money. Creating your own metal planters by re-purposing objects is also environmentally wise. All you need are a few supplies and some creativity to create a few do-it-yourself metal planters that will add creative additions to your home garden.
  1. Grills

    • Turn an old barbecue or grill into a metal planter. Remove any charcoal or the inside element and clean thoroughly. Fill the bottom with gravel and pour potting soil on top of the gravel. If there are no holes in the bottom of the barbecue or grill, drill a couple to allow water to drain. Without drainage, plants can develop root rot, which can be deadly. Plant flowers in the soil and enjoy. For added decoration, paint the outside of the barbecue or grill.

    Coffee Cans

    • Metal coffee cans come in different sizes. Turn your empty coffee cans into beautiful garden planters. Drill a couple of holes in the bottom of the cans for water drainage. Wash the cans with water and soap. Decorate the cans by painting them solid white or black. Take flower stencils and paint flowers on the cans. Make an herb garden by lining several cans side-by-side on a ledge. Use paint pens to write the type of herb on the side of each can.

    Metal Ice Tubs

    • Metal ice tubs come in a variety of sizes, colors and shapes. Turn those old ice tubs into garden masterpieces by decorating them and filling them with your favorite flowers. Look for ice tubs at garage sales and thrift stores. Use a metal bit to drill drain holes in the bottom.

    Cauldrons

    • Turn metal cauldrons into planters, as well. Find old rustic metal cauldrons at many thrift stores and garage sales. Leave the cauldrons rustic, or scrub with wire cleaning pads, soap and water, and then paint.
