How to Grow a Polka Dot Plant

Polka dot plants, otherwise known as Hypoestes phyllostachya, measles plant and freckle face, are perennials native to Madagascar and known for their pink and green spots. This little-known plant is grown indoors and thrives under specific conditions. Because the plant is not native to North America, it requires higher humidity levels and filtered sunlight to mimic its warmer origins. Use the right type of soil and provide your polka dot plants with adequate water to ensure they thrive and reach their full potential.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Plant the seed or seedling in well-drained soil. Dig a hole that is large enough to accommodate the seed or root ball and back-fill it with the existing soil.

    • 2

Cover the soil with a 1-inch layer of peat moss. The moss protects the growing seedling against damage while holding in moisture.

    • 3

Fertilize the plant every two weeks during the spring, summer and fall months with a water-soluble fertilizer specifically designed for perennial plants. Dilute one part fertilizer with one part water, or mix and apply according to the package directions.

    • 4

Provide enough water to keep your polka dot plant moist, not soaking wet. Monitor the peat moss and top soil and each time it feels dry to the touch, provide the plant with enough water to moisten the soil. Do not allow the soil to dry out.

    • 5

Display your polka dot plant in an area that receives filtered sun throughout most of the day. Do not allow the plant to remain in full sun to prevent drying out the soil and causing leaf damage.

    • 6

Keep the plant in an area that maintains a relative humidity of at least 50 percent. Use a humidifier or mist the plant with plain water, as needed, to provide it with enough moisture to thrive.
