How to Overwinter a Charmed Wine Plant

Charmed Wine (oxalis), one of several shamrock varieties, can fill a shady or partly sunny growing area with plentiful foliage and delicate pink blossoms. Hardy in USDA zones 8 through 11, growing Charmed Wine in colder regions requires special winter care to prevent the plant’s demise. Overwinter a Charmed Wine plant to keep it healthy and vibrant from year to year and the plant will respond with new growth each spring.

Instructions

  1. Houseplant

    • 1

Move the plant inside before the first autumn frost. Place the plant in a sunny window to grow it as a houseplant over the winter.

    • 2

Water the Charmed Wine plant sparingly throughout the winter -- once or twice each month should be sufficient.

    • 3

Resume regular watering of the houseplant in early spring, providing enough water to keep the soil evenly moist.

    • 4

Prune away any leggy or shaggy growth that occurred over the winter. Trim stems off just above a leaf node, removing up to half of the length of the stems.

    • 5

Move the plant outdoors again after the final spring frost. Resume fertilization by mixing water-soluble fertilizer at half strength. Fertilize the plant twice each month.

    Dormant

    • 6

Cut back the Charmed Wine plant to just above soil level if you plan to allow the plant to go dormant over the winter.

    • 7

Move the plant to a dark, sheltered location -- such as an unheated basement -- before the first autumn frost. The darkness and cool temperature will encourage the plant to become dormant.

    • 8

Suspend watering for the dormant Charmed Wine plant.

    • 9

Move the dormant Charmed Wine plant out of the dark location in the beginning of spring and place it in an indoor location that receives full sunlight.

    • 10

Resume regular watering of the houseplant, providing enough water to keep the soil evenly moist.

    • 11

Move the plant outdoors again after the final spring frost. Resume fertilization by mixing water-soluble fertilizer at half strength. Fertilize the plant twice each month.
