Ideas on What to Grow in the Garden With 'Casa Blanca' Lilies

With narrow stems topped by large, pure-white flowers, the "Casa Blanca" lily (Lilium "Casa Blanca") adds a regal touch to the landscape. These hybrids, also known as oriental lilies, are prized for both the stately appearance and spicy fragrance of their summer blossoms. Hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 5 to 8, these 4-foot-tall plants thrive in rich soil and grow best when their roots are shaded and their tops are in full sun. Choose companion plants that thrive in similar conditions and provide shade for your "Casa Blanca" lilies' roots.
  1. Ground Covers

    • Ground covers' shallow root systems won't compete with "Casa Blanca" lilies. Companion ground covers include summer phlox (Phlox paniculata), a perennial that grows to 3 feet tall and wide. Summer phlox blooms with white flowers and thrives in rich, moist soil and full sun to partial shade. It's hardy in USDA zones 4 to 8. "Casa Blanca" lilies grow well with hostas (Hostas spp.). These flowering ground covers are prized for their diverse foliage and come in a range of sizes, shapes and colors from the white-green variegated "Fortunei Albo-Marginata" to the blue-leaved "Halcyon." Hostas are hardy in USDA zones 3 to 9 and grow well in moist, well-draining soil and partial shade. They bloom with purple to lilac flowers from mid-summer to fall.

    Perennials

    • "Casa Blanca" lilies have sparse foliage, so choose perennials that help fill in their understory. Anise-scented sage (Salia guaranitica) provides foliage cover and blue blossoms after the lilies have faded in fall. Cultivars such as "Black and Blue" and "Argentine Skies" also add spicy fragrance to the air. Anise salvia grows to 6 feet tall and thrives in moist, well-draining soil and sun to partial shade. It's hardy in USDA zones 7 to 10. Montbretias (Crocosmia × crocosmiiflora) also grow well with "Casa Blanca" lilies. These 3-foot-tall perennials grow in clumps and bloom with delicate red, orange and gold flowers in late summer. They're hardy in USDA zones 6 to 9 and grow well in full sun or partial shade.

    Shrubs

    • Plant shrubs with complementary colors and similar cultural preferences, such as the summersweet clethra (Clethra alnifolia). This deciduous shrub is hardy in USDA zones 3 to 9 and grows well in moist, rich soil and sun to shade. The summersweet clethra blooms with aromatic pink flowers in late summer, attracting bees and butterflies. It grows from 3 to 6 feet tall. The panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) forms an attractive backdrop for "Casa Blanca" lilies. These flowering shrubs grow to 30 feet tall and bloom with pyramid-shaped clusters of pink flowers that fade to white. Panicle hydrangeas are hardy in USDA zones 3 to 8 and grow well in moist, well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade.

    Annuals

    • Annuals add color through the growing season. "Casa Blanca" lily companions include petunias (Petunia integrifolia). This cascading annual grows to 3 feet and blooms from spring through frost with purple flowers. It prefers full sun and moderate irrigation. For dramatic white blooms, plant moonflowers (Ipomoea alba). These annual vines bloom in the evening with large, white flowers. They bloom from spring through fall and grow up to 15 feet long. Plant moonflowers in moist, well-draining soil and full sun.
