How to Overseed Ladino Clover

Ladino clover is a common pasture clover used for foraging animals. The clover can be overseeded in a pasture that contains cool-season grasses during the rest of the year. This process of overseeding prevents erosion, provides a variety of food for foraging animals and increases the nitrogen levels in the soil. Ladino clover fixes nitrogen from the air and adds it to the soil, which allows you to skip nitrogen fertilizer.

Instructions

    • 1

Mow the existing grass down as short as possible, if you do not have animals grazing in the area. If you do have grazing animals, leave them out to pasture to overgraze, which will shorten the grass. This gives the ladino seeds easier access to the ground.

    • 2

Broadcast the ladino clover seeds by hand over the existing grass at a rate of 1 to 2 pounds per acre. For larger pastures, you can use a manual or motorized seed spreader. Pour the seeds into the hopper and walk the pasture or field in even rows to distribute the seed evenly. Do this in January or February.

    • 3

Do not cover the seeds with soil or mulch. The freezing of the soil in winter and the subsequent thawing will work the seeds into the soil naturally. They will germinate and sprout in spring, and bloom in summer.
